How to: Minimalize your wardrobe

Are you done with all the clothes catching dust in your closet? Do you get choice paralysis from the overload of options? At BOUND we love a good elegantly timeless yet convenient outfit. We also believe that it doesn't have to be filled with items of fleeting trends. I, Malu Ultee, the founder of BOUND STUDIOS - I've been living a minimalistic lifestyle for many years. It has given me the freedom of time and space in many ways. And even tho my closet isn't filled with the latest fashion items, I still love fashion and how I can express myself with the items that I love.

In this blogpost I am sharing my best tips to get started. My capsule collection is filled with timeless quality pieces that I've collected over the years - yet I rarely don't know what to wear. I notice that having a lot of options was taking up a lot of headspace in the morning and now that I have my closet filled with my favorite clothes and accessories; I can't recommend it enough to anyone.

So here are my 7 tips:
  1. Choose timeless over trend

    • Invest in classic, high-quality staples that never go out of style. Think of a pair of silver hoops, a little black dress, or a pair of tailored trousers. These pieces can be mixed and matched effortlessly, providing endless outfit possibilities.

  2. Opt for better materials

    • Look for clothing made from ethical fabrics such as organic cotton, second hand cashmere, or linnen. These not only have a lower environmental impact but also often offer superior comfort and durability. A lot of fashion items are made from the most inexpensive materials like polyester (which is literally plastic), steel or acrylic and feel rather thin + damage faster than quality materials.

  3. Focus on versatility

    • Select items that can be worn in multiple ways. For instance, a good quality white shirt can be styled with a good pair of jeans or with a pantalon and loafers.  Add some gold jewelry and you're ready to go.

Versatile pieces help you maximize your outfit options while minimizing the number of items you own.

  4. Prioritize quality over quantity

    • Instead of buying numerous low-cost items, investing in a few higher-quality piece that will last longer is part of playing the long game.

Premium wear tends to retain its shape, color, and overall look better over time, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

  5. Find your palette and stick to it

    • Creating a personal color palette allows you to mix and match your items flawlessly. It creates a cohesive wardrobe where almost everything works well together, making it simpler to put together outfits in the morning.

  6. Maintenance + care

    • Properly caring for your clothing can significantly extend its life. Follow washing instructions, store items correctly, and repair rather than discard damaged pieces. This not only keeps your wardrobe looking topnotch but also reduces waste.

  7. Adopt a Capsule Wardrobe

Create a capsule wardrobe by selecting most of your absolute favorite items and essential items that can be mixed and matched to create numerous looks. This approach encourages thoughtful purchases and reduces clutter, allowing you to focus on quality and functionality.

I hope this helps!

Love,
Malu
