Let’s be honest, we all love pearls, they are elegant, they are bright & they are subtle.
But we rarely think of what it takes to retrieve each pearl, or we may choose to ignore it. Since BOUND STUDIOS is committed to be a sustainable jewelry brand, it unavoidably means saying no to pearls.

While natural pearls are exceedingly rare, the way “cultured” or also known as fresh water pearls are made is not any better for the oysters. These pearls are made by placing a small round bead, or a piece of oyster shell, inside of the oyster, irritating them & causing them to produce a protective crystalline nacre that forms around the inserted piece. After a long period of 2 to 5 years, the pearl finally reaches the desired size to be sold in the market. If this process takes longer than desired, oyster farmers can stress the oysters by changing the water type or temperature to accelerate the production.
Oysters are incredibly important for the environment because they act as a water filter. They remove organic and inorganic particles from the water column, which results in cleaner water, positively impacting other species.
As part of our commitment to being a vegan brand since BOUND STUDIOS was founded, we chose not to be a part of this industry. However, we did not want to miss out on the elegance and delicacy of pearls, so we decided to introduce our own version of a “pearl” necklace, bracelet & stud earrings: the Mae collection. Made of 100% recycled sterling silver and with the option of 18k gold plating, this line is made of small pearl-shaped silver beads.
Wear them like pearls. Stack them. Make a statement.
